Generalization and Maintenance
Sessions are implemented in the community (schools, parks, malls, playgroups, and more) in order to teach social and living skills and to ensure for generalization. Learners are guided to follow instructions and tasks and/or to socialize with peers in a school setting (schools, pre-schools, day cares etc), or in other settings such as; recreational activities, parks, playgroups, playdates and outings. Living skills are taught in the community such as restaurants, malls, grocery store, and more.
Parents will be guided to assist their child to generalize skills at home and in the community. Teaching is not successful until all skills are generalized to similar situations outside of therapy settings. Hence, a parent’s involvement is very important to ensure progress in their child’s development.
After your child successfully generalizes skills, an assessment is done to ensure that your child is maintaining the skills he/she has learned outside of training (generalization). In other words, to ensure that the changes are permanent. This is referred to as “maintenance”.
